The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has selected the Broad Institute for the Sentinel project as the Award Recipient for 100&Change. Sentinel is a global outbreak surveillance framework co-led by Pardis Sabeti of the Broad Institute and Christian Happi of the Institute of Genomics and Global Health at Redeemer\u2019s University in Nigeria. It works to prevent pandemics by strengthening community-led detection and response systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MacArthur\u2019s Board chose Sentinel from among five Finalists in the third round of 100&Change, a global competition seeking bold, evidence-based solutions to critical challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn a moment where investments in global public health are at risk, the Sentinel project will transform infectious disease surveillance and response through cutting-edge technology, global collaboration, and local empowerment,\u201d said MacArthur Foundation President John Palfrey. \u201cSentinel detects, prevents, and preempts outbreaks to save lives and strengthen global health security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are deeply grateful for this recognition,\u201d said Pardis Sabeti, co-director of Sentinel. \u201cThis support will help build a future where every community has the tools and knowledge to stop outbreaks before they spread.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis moment affirms that global health solutions can be locally led,\u201d added Christian Happi, co-director of Sentinel. \u201cSentinel is built on trust, collaboration, and systems that empower countries to respond swiftly and confidently to disease threats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 3,000 public health workers across Africa have already been trained through Sentinel. The project aims to strengthen its frameworks in Nigeria and Sierra Leone and expand to additional countries over the next five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All five Finalists, along with other top-ranking applicants, will join Lever for Change\u2019s Bold Solutions Network, a curated group of vetted organisations with the potential to secure additional support and broaden their impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
