Each year, World Malaria Day renews the global call to end one of humanity\u2019s oldest and deadliest diseases. At the Institute of Genomics and Global Health (IGH), we believe that defeating malaria requires not just stronger tools, but smarter, data-driven strategies rooted in local leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IGH is playing a critical role in malaria elimination efforts by incorporating genomics into malaria surveillance and strengthening frontline research capacity. Our teams conduct ongoing molecular genotyping of malaria parasites and study drug resistance markers to track how parasite populations evolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This work is vital: understanding parasite diversity and resistance dynamics allows for timely, data-informed decisions on intervention strategies, ensuring that tools like medicines and vaccines remain effective as the malaria parasite adapts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Capacity building is another cornerstone of our commitment. Earlier this year, IGH concluded a 4-day International Centers of Excellence for Malaria Research (ICEMR) Training Programme, focused on strengthening malaria research capacity. Through hands-on sessions in diagnostics, surveillance, and data management, we equipped scientists, clinicians, and data specialists with the skills to improve malaria control on the frontlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants were trained in ethical research practices, high-quality data collection, and information security, culminating in real-world applications during site visits to health facilities in Asubiaro and Ede.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through this dual approach\u2014advancing molecular surveillance via genomics and strengthening human capacity\u2014IGH is contributing to a future where malaria is no longer a persistent threat. We recognize that no single tool can eliminate malaria; it requires locally led, context-driven strategies that combine prevention, treatment, innovation, and strong surveillance systems. Genomics enables us to tailor responses, protect vulnerable populations, and accelerate progress toward eradication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s World Malaria Day theme calls on all of us to Reinvest<\/em> in proven strategies, Reimagine<\/em> how we deliver solutions, and Reignite<\/em> our collective efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At IGH, we remain committed to using science to drive smarter malaria control strategies and building a future where malaria is no longer a burden for African communities\u2014or for the world.
